Ever skipped the planning phase and ended up with an entirely different video than the one you intended? One word: pre-production.
Invest in pre-production
Video requires you to invest some precious time and effort, no one can deny that. While you can't avoid spending this time entirely, you can minimise it by investing a little in your pre-production to save a lot in your production and post-production stages. Pre-production can help you achieve:
a good video concept
an efficient shoot
a clear edit brief
With a clear plan for your video, you can also keep other stakeholders in your organisation in the loop. This minimises the risk of having your finished video rejected, requiring you to start from scratch.
Thankfully, a little planning can go a long way. So how do you do minimal planning for maximal result?
How to plan for a video
There are 3 steps to setting up a good video plan.
Step 1: Identify a need
The first questions you should always ask yourself are:
Why should this be a video?
Would a video help you or your audience to achieve something more than if it were just an e-mail or a conversation?
Would people want to watch this video?
If the answer is not a clear yes with a solid reason, perhaps it isn't meant to be a video, and it isn't worth your time.
Step 2: Set a goal and KPIs
Start a Video Plan to map out what you’re trying to achieve with this video. Are you trying to create awareness, are you conveying a message, are you telling a story or just trying to explain or instruct?
Secondly, what will you measure to see if you were able to achieve that goal? Reach, views? Average view duration? Conversion Rate? For more information check out how to set a goal and KPIs for your video.
Step 3: Map out your video structure
What’s your message or story and how will you show that visually? Use our Video Plan to map out your script and storyboard at the same time in the one document. Check out our tips and tricks on how to grab and keep attention with video too!
